ABOUT

Commissioned by and for the Göteborg Opera Dance Company, SOFT CELL is part of THE ALMOST NEARLY PERFECT a double evening program with choreographies by Constanza Macras and the Spanish choreographer Marina Mascarell. This program is also part of the GIBCA Extended program of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art.
In SOFT CELL Constanza Macras interpreted “The Jante Law” and the theme of the  Göteborg Opera dance season 2015/2016: “All together now/A common sense”.

What is “The Jante Law”? The cultural term “The Jante Law” first appeared in Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose’s book A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (1933). The law consists of ten rules which, characterized by village mentality, sums up the mechanisms of envy and jealousy:

1. You’re not to think you are anything special.
2. You’re not to think you are as good as we are.
3. You’re not to think you are smarter than we are.
4. You’re not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
5. You’re not to think you know more than we do.
6. You’re not to think you are more important than we are.
7. You’re not to think you are good at anything.
8. You’re not to laugh at us.
9. You’re not to think anyone cares about you.
10. You’re not to think you can teach us anything.

The Jante Law also has a eleventh rule, called ”the penal code of Jante”:

11. Perhaps you don’t think we know a few things about you?
